Với một số người học, ngữ pháp về dạng câu tường thuật trong tiếng Anh có lẽ khá rắc rối và khó nhớ. 1. Khái niệm câu trực tiếp, gián tiếp trong tiếng Anh

1.1 Câu tường thuật trực tiếp (Direct speech)

Là mẫu câu thuật lại chính xác những gì người nói muốn truyền đạt, thường là câu trích dẫn được đặt trong dấu ngoặc kép.

Ví dụ:

• Mai asked: “Can you just ignore it?” (Mai hỏi: “Cậu có thể cứ mặc kệ đi được không?”)
• Nam said: “I don’t want to drink it!” (Nam nói: “Mình không muốn uống cái này đâu!”)

1.2 Câu tường thuật gián tiếp (Indirect speech)

Là mẫu câu dùng để thuật lại lời của người nào đó một cách gián tiếp, không trích dẫn y nguyên, không kèm dấu ngoặc kép.

Ví dụ:

• Mai asked if I could just ignore it. (Mai hỏi liệu rằng tôi có thể kệ việc này đi được không.)
• Nam said that he didn’t want to drink it. (Nam nói rằng cậu ấy không hề muốn uống nó.)

2. Cách chuyển câu trực tiếp sang gián tiếp trong tiếng Anh

Trong tiếng Anh, để chuyển từ câu trực tiếp sang gián tiếp, bạn cần làm theo 4 bước sau đây:

2.1 Xác định động từ tường thuật phù hợp

Bước đầu tiên là chọn động từ tường thuật thích hợp với mục đích truyền tải của người nói (trần thuật, yêu cầu, hỏi,...). Một số động từ tường thuật thường thấy là: said, told, asked, denied, promised, suggested.

Ví dụ:

Linh told me that she had bought a new phone. (Linh nói với tôi là cô ấy đã mua một chiếc điện thoại mới.)

2.2 Lùi thì của động từ ở mệnh đề được tường thuật

Khi chuyển câu trực tiếp sang gián tiếp, chúng ta cần hiểu rằng người nói chỉ đang kể lại lời nói của một người trong quá khứ. Do đó, trong câu gián tiếp, động từ trong mệnh đề được tường thuật cần phải lùi lại 1 thì so với thời điểm nói. Cụ thể:

• • Thì hiện tại đơn → Thì quá khứ đơn (Ví dụ: Buy → Bought)

• Thì hiện tại tiếp diễn → Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

(Ví dụ: is/ are talking → was/ were talking)

• Thì hiện tại hoàn thành → Thì quá khứ hoàn thành

(Ví dụ: has/ have studied → had studied)

• Thì hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn → Thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn

(Ví dụ: has/ have been learning → had been learning)

• • Thì quá khứ đơn → Thì quá khứ hoàn thành (Ví dụ: sold → had sold)

• Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn → Thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn

(Ví dụ: was/ were talking → had been talking)

• Will → Would

• Can → Could

• Must/ Have to → Had to

• May → Might

Lưu ý một số trường hợp KHÔNG lùi thì động từ trong mệnh đề tường thuật sau:

• Đề cập đến một chân lý, sự thật hiển nhiên
• Câu điều kiện loại 2, 3
• Câu trực tiếp có could, should, would, might, ought to
• Trong câu có năm xác định.

2.3 Đổi các đại từ, tân ngữ

Khi chuyển đổi từ câu trực tiếp sang câu gián tiếp, bạn cần lưu ý thay đổi đại từ nhân xưng, đại từ sở hữu, tân ngữ trong mệnh đề được tường thuật cho phù hợp.

Chủ ngữ:

• I → He/ She
• You → I/ We/ They
• We → We/ They

Tân ngữ:

• Me → Him/ Her
• You → Me/ Us/ Them
• Us → Us/ Them

Đại từ sở hữu

• My → His/ Her
• Your → My/ Our/ Their
• Our → Our/ Their

Đại từ sở hữu

• Mine → His/ Hers
• Yours → Mine/ Ours/ Theirs
• Ours → Ours/ Theirs

Ví dụ:

“Are they your friends?” Jane asked. → Jane asked me if they were my friends. (Jane hỏi tôi liệu họ có phải là bạn của tôi hay không.)

2.4 Chuyển đổi các trạng từ chỉ thời gian, địa điểm

Khi chuyển từ câu trực tiếp sang gián tiếp trong tiếng Anh, bạn còn cần đổi cả một số từ chỉ thời gian, nơi chốn sau đây:

• Here → There
• Now → Then
• Today → That day
• Yesterday → The previous day hoặc the day before
• Tomorrow → The following day hoặc the next day
• Ago → Before
• Last → The previous
• Next → The following
• This → That
• These → Those

Ví dụ:

“I went to visit my daughter last week,” Lily said.

→ Lily said she had gone to visit her daughter the week before.

3. Các dạng câu tường thuật thường gặp

3.1 Câu trần thuật

Là dạng câu được dùng để thuật lại các sự việc, miêu tả hoặc nhận định sự việc, trạng thái, tính chất.

Cấu trúc:

S + say(s)/ said + (that) + S + V

Ví dụ:

Susan said, “I have a new boyfriend.”

→ Susan said (that) she had a new boyfriend. (Susan nói rằng cô ấy đã có bạn trai mới.)

3.2 Câu hỏi

• Câu hỏi yes/ no:

S + asked/ wanted to know/ wondered + if/ whether + S + V

Ví dụ:

Jack asked me: “Will you go out tonight? → Jack asked me if I would go out that night.” (Jack hỏi tôi liệu tối hôm đó tôi có đi ra ngoài hay không.)

• Wh-question:

S + asked/ wondered/ wanted to know + Wh-question + S + V

Ví dụ:

My mom asked: “Why did you call her?”

→ My mom wanted to know why I had called her. (Mẹ muốn biết sao tôi lại gọi cho cô ấy.)

3.3 Câu mệnh lệnh

Cấu trúc:

S + asked/ told/ requested/ demanded/ required/ order + O + (not) + to V

Ví dụ:

“Turn off your phone! It is too noisy” - she said.

=> She told me to turn off my phone because it was too noisy.
